I can’t help but wonder about two of Flagstaff’s most popular bars right now. One, Maloney’s has had, for some time now, the Thursday night special of “two for one.” That is, buy one rum and coke and get the second for free, for example. Collin’s has also had the same special and last year that special stopped at midnight. This year, Maloney’s has decided to continue that special until closing. Collin’s has stayed put with their old ways. However, Collin’s has added an additional section on to the bar where drinks can be bought, pool can be played and the socializing can continue. The section is a more mellow area where those who don’t feel like dancing or getting drinks spilled all over them, can enjoy their friends’ company in peace i.e., where I’ll be. So which bar will out rule the other this year?

For the past few years, it’s been Collin’s but I remember when I first turned 21, Maloney’s was the place to be and Collin’s was similar to a library. I can’t help but wonder what the turn out will be this upcoming school year.

Nothing to do but sit back and see what happens! But like I said, if you want to see me and I happen to be at Collin’s, I’ll be in the new area not getting my crotch grabbed by strangers.

If you want to get a little taste of what some of the local girl bathroom chatter is like in bars these days, check out a recent post on my other blog. I would try to find out what men talk about in the bathroom, if anything, but I think they would find it weird to see me standing there listening when I am, quite obviously, female. Either that or they would like it.

Past due

So, it’s been since April that I’ve written here and I must say, wow. That is pathetic. I guess it might be because my lifestyle has changed a bit since summer has hit. As mentioned on the previous post, I’m trying to avoid alcohol and substitute it with running. And much of it. I’m still training for the Imogene Pass Run in September.

Also, the nightlife in Flagstaff becomes a bit dead when summer hits and all the NAU students go home. There are other factors too. I recently moved and didn’t have access to the Internet in a month. Work got busy and now I’m switching jobs. Anyway, enough excuses. Basically, I haven’t really been…out.

The last time I went out it was with my boyfriend and we went to Mia’s. The place was dead. There were probably about 7 people there total. On any other fired up night though, Mia’s is pretty rad. I would highly recommend it.

So, I’ll be back to regular posting soon but I must warn ye, this blog might take a slight turn for a while. Since I haven’t been participating in Flagstaff’s nightlife much lately, I’m going to write about my mission to try out as many restaurants in Flagstaff as I can. Joining in my journey has been my boyfriend, 6-6. If you don’t read my regular blog, Gooseberried, 6-6 stands for the fact that he is 6 feet 6 inches tall. I’m 5’1″. We look quite odd together.

Nonetheless, we’ll be trying out new restaurants and I’ll be reporting back here. The places we go will be drawn from a jar.

Oh, how I will miss you

It’s true, Dime Beers.

We had some good times. Alas, it is time for me to retire. I’m running the Imogene Pass race in September and I began my training two weeks ago. This means, no more beer for me. Since the whole point of Wednesday nights at the Museum club is to serve dime beers, I won’t be attending for a while.

Well, maybe next week.

It’s too bad we had to part so soon.

Alas, another night at Collins.

Fortunately, I ran into a large group of friends of mine from a year or two ago. I used to live with them all in the Tinsley dorm when I was in college and it was those years that I had the most fun. So, the fact that my friend, Chica, and I were at Collins (a bar I usually loathe) was wiped from my thoughts while I focused on hanging out with them. If any of you don’t know, Tinsley is one of the two international dorms on campus. While non-internationals may live there too, the majority of the dorm is foreign. I’m quite certain this is why I had so much fun living there. My friend, Abdullah, was quite taken by Chica. She’s a good friend, but is quite shy. She’s basically not the kind of girl that’s going to get up on the bar and dance in front of everyone while wearing a skirt up around her private areas. But Abdullah wanted to dance.

He asked her several times to join him on the dance floor only to get a firm, “No thanks” from her. But Abdullah was not having it. Eventually, he just grabbed her arm and pulled her out there. I couldn’t stop laughing.

New friends based on chapstick?

There’s a bar here in town called Maloney’s which I used to dislike. But things have changed. I’m none too fond of Collin’s Irish Pub these days because now, it’s what Maloney’s used to be- packed full of people I usually don’t associate myself with. Collin’s is also so busy due to recent popularity that standing in line for thirty minutes to an hour just to get in is not uncommon. Lately though, Maloney’s has been alright. I still don’t like it as much as the Monte Vista Lounge or Charlies, mostly because the music is so loud, I can’t hear what my friends are saying, but I digress…I’ll go if everyone else wants to. My roommate was happy to be there:

She looks so happy, in fact, that she could play a character in an 1800s movie, don’t you think? All she needs is a floofy dress with a corset.

Jenna and I met a group of her guy friends there, including one who I am currently dating.

Lesbians for the night

I’m still loving the Museum Club. In fact, it’s becoming one of my favorite places to visit on a Wednesday night. Mostly because of the dime beers and also because I don’t have to work a.k.a. get up early in the morning on Thursdays.

The last time I went, I decided to take my friend, Sera. At one point, we both had to go to the bathroom, and like most girls always do, we went together. We’re both in our designated stalls squatting over the toilet when in storms a woman I can’t see through the stall besides her black shirt and very red earrings.

“WHERE’S MY GIRLFRIIIIIENDDDD!?!?!”

(pause)

“WHO IS MAKING OUT WITH HER IN HERE? SHE’S MINE! YOU CAN’T TRY TO STEAL HER AWAYYYYYYYY!!!”

Both Sera and I remain silent while this girl screams her head off. Finally, she walks up to my stall and pounds on the door.

“ARE YOU IN THERE WITH MARIA!? IF YOU ARE, I’M GONNA KICK YOUR ASS!”

I decided not to say anything back, but I did remain in my stall for protection. Not that I couldn’t beat her up or anything. Mmm hmm. Being 5’1″ and all.

Finally the girl got bored and left. Sera and I both exited our stalls at the same time and looked at each other with our traumatized faces. We laughed about it later that night and took this picture for Maria and her crazy, outraged girlfriend:

No, girlfriend of Maria. I’m not making out with Maria, because I’m with Sera. And if you steal her away, I’ll kick your ass.

A trip to the zoo

In all my years living in Flagstaff, I still had never visited the Museum Club, an old lodge looking bar off of Route 66. I figured it was about time I pay my respects. Especially since my friend, Dan, was taking a little break from working on the Hillary campaign team (yep, seriously) with a quick Flagstaff visit before heading out to Vegas the next day.

And also because they have a unique deal on Wednesday nights called dime beers. Literally, beer is only a dime after you pay the five dollar cover charge, of course. But who cares when it involves unlimited cheap beers for the rest of the night?

I had always heard such great things about the Museum Club, aka The Zoo, but never really had a chance to go there because I usually always either had class or work the next morning. And my consensus was…

It was fabulous!

It actually reminded me of the few bars running in my home town, Heber, which in my opinion, isn’t a bad thing. There was an eclectic mix of college students, hippies and cowboys. Yes, random. It was amusing how the music went from a country song to a rap song in a single five song play list.

Next time I go, I’m going to try to dance with a cowboy. What do ya think?

A birthday of sorts

There’s no better excuse to get out than a friend’s birthday. Not only that, it is expected of you. A friend says, “It’s my birthday this Saturday and we’re going downtown.” Then you best be there or else, be labeled a bad friend.My friend, Clarissa, who is a new friend in my life as of recently had her birthday a couple of weeks ago, which is honestly unfortunate because it was freezing outside. Nonetheless, we kicked off the evening at Buster’s which is a restaurant/bar. Where else would we be but the bar area, of course?

For those of you that aren’t aware, Buster’s is infamous for their Buster bowls, which are a fish bowl filled with…honestly, I don’t know. I do know that there are many different kinds of alcohol in them yet, somehow they come out tasting delicious. They are, in fact, so strong that Buster’s management won’t allow you to order one solely for yourself; you must share it with at least one other person.

There are three different kinds: tropical (the original), grape and orange. The grape one is good but just a tad too sweet for my liking. That night we had the orange.

See those straws? They lead to Buster-bowlness. And drunkness. And I-can’t-remember-what-happened-last-nightness.

Later we all went downtown to Collins which is fast becoming one of my least favorite bars in Flagstaff. But that’s where Clarissa wanted to go, so I had no choice. Hrmph.

It was still fun though…

For the calm and relaxed

Sometimes you just feel tired. You get up everyday, go to work and then when you get home at night, the absolute last thing you feel like doing is going out. It happens to all of us. But even still, friends call and expect you to socialize. Solution?

The Wine Loft

Unless you’re so tired you feel as though you may fall asleep standing, The Wine Loft is the perfect place to gather with friends and drink. Always a relaxed atmosphere, this place is where you should be if you don’t feel like dealing with the crowds and the loud music that most bars have.

My friends and I really aren’t the greatest of wine connoisseurs. We simply don’t have the money for those sorts of things. Despite that, The Wine Loft is still a place to be visited. The last time my roommate and I went, we asked the bartender for recommendations. All we knew was that we wanted a white wine. After he asked us a series of questions, he was able to pin-point a particular wine that we should be drinking. His recommendation was right on. And for those of you that are wine connoisseurs, there’s plenty to choose from.

One of my favorite things about The Wine Loft is the atmosphere. I don’t know if it’s the wine, the lighting or the way the place is decorated but as soon as I walk in, I instantely feel in a homey and warm place. The music is never too loud and is always at the perfect pace and feel. This makes The Wine Loft a good place to catch up with your friends.

If you get too bored just sitting around talking, The Wine Loft also has a great list of games to chose from that you and your friends can play.

After the bartender recommended a specific wine to us, my roommate and I began to feel very relaxed from the combination of the above. We played Scrabble.
